Summary  / 176

At the dawn of the 3rd millennium, mankind has come to a realisation: it has realised that the nature mankind has hitherto sought to dominate must be respected, and that man is only one element of the nature in which he must live in harmony.

Living beings interact with each other and with their environment. They are confronted with the problems of territorial dialogue, the sharing of resources, the needs of non-human living beings and the place of nature in our society. Ecological mediation leads us to rethink our place on the planet and to help nature's place evolve.

The definition of environmental mediation is vague. There are a multitude of styles of mediation and areas of intervention: territorial dialogue, resource sharing (water, forests, public spaces), the challenges raised by climate change; rural, urban and maritime works; industrial development projects; land or river planning (which raises the issue of the needs of non-human living creatures, aquatic and terrestrial animals). A wide range of players are involved (institutions, companies, associations, elected representatives, local residents, farmers).

This book will approach the study of environmental mediation as the process of living together better in and alongside our natural environment. The aim of environmental mediation is to promote the harmonious coexistence between human beings, other species and their environment. It can help build a collective vision and reconcile individual interests with the general interest.

We will examine these points in the following chapters:

I - Environmental mediation at the service of territorial dialogue
II - Ecology, environment and project. Environmental mediation, project mediation.
III - The place of those absent from environmental mediation: integrating the general public and living non-humans into a project mediation system.
IV - Ecomediation: why should we allow ourselves to do things differently?
V - A new kind of project mediation in environmental matters. „Facilitating dialogue between local residents and farmers on agricultural practices in the La Rochelle countryside”.
VI - An example of mediation in a complex legal context: asbestos anxiety claims.
