Every person is a story in the making. A story made up of relatively stable traits and subtle transformations, of fragile balances and inner conflicts, of conscious choices and often invisible mechanisms. Personality psychology approaches this story not to reduce it to simple patterns, but to capture its complexity and meaning.
This book starts from a fundamental question: what makes us who we are? The answers are never unambiguous. They take shape at the intersection of structure and becoming, of adaptation and rigidity, of normality and suffering. Personality is not a fixed object, but a living process, which organizes itself, defends itself, transforms itself and, sometimes, becomes fragile.
The volume proposes a broad incursion into personality psychology, structured around three major directions. The first concerns the structure of personality – the way in which the self, traits and psychic regulation mechanisms are organized. The second explores the great thes of personality, from psychodynamic to humanistic and existential perspectives, each offering a distinct key to understanding human nature. The third direction is dedicated to personality disorders, approached not as simple clinical labels, but as forms of psychic organization in which adaptation strategies become rigid and costly.
Personality psychology is on the border between normal and pathological, but also between scientific knowledge and reflection on human experience. By studying personality, we become more attentive to the continuities between healthy functioning and imbalance, between common traits and extreme manifestations.
This book is addressed to psychology students, but also to all those interested in the dynamics of psychic life and human relationships. Beyond concepts and classifications, it speaks of identity, attachment, meaning and the difficulty of remaining authentic in a demanding world. A book about people for people. If its pages open questions and stimulate reflection on oneself and others, the goal of this endeavor will have been achieved.
