  • Guide to Competency-Based Supervision in Psychotherapy

Supervision is, first and foremost, an encounter between people and a space where the aspiring psychotherapist learns to view their practice with sincerity, courage, and responsibility. Supervisees enter this process not only with questions regarding cases, methods, or interventions but also with their own doubts, emotions, vulnerabilities, resources, and professional aspirations. They need guidance as they evolve—receiving clear benchmarks and honest feedback—while also feeling safe enough to reflect, ask questions, make mistakes, and learn. This guide is the result of the authors' years of supervising multiple generations of practitioners. Each supervision session aims to enhance the professionalism of both the supervisor and the supervisee.

The guide to competency-based psychotherapy supervision presents a perspective in which the supervisee is an active participant in their own development. The model supports the progressive development of clinical, methodological, relational, ethical, and reflective competencies, alongside the ability to integrate research, scientific evidence, and professional responsibility into daily practice. The guide is designed to help supervisees recognize their resources and challenges, thereby increasing their professional autonomy. For supervisors, it provides a coherent framework for tailoring the supervision process to the pace, needs, and developmental level of each supervisee. Yet, supervision cannot exist without the client: the supervisee grows for the sake of both themselves and the client, while the supervisor grows for the sake of themselves and the supervisees they will work with in the future. Beyond observable and assessable competencies, our work addresses the formation of the psychotherapist's identity: how knowledge, experience, reflection, and relationship evolve into a mature, ethical, and deeply human practice focused on the well-being of the person seeking help. At the same time, we can also speak of the formation of the supervisor's identity as an ongoing professional process aimed at the well-being of the supervisee and, by extension, that of the client.
