Writing a book with personal impressions and reflections about travels through the United States, after Romanian readers became aware, starting in the 70s, of the diaries written by our great historian Constantin C. Giurescu or the writer Romulus Rusan, is a great gesture daring.
I decided to dare arguing that in today's times anyone can make such a trip, without the need for special invitations, to visit interesting civil objectives and tourist places from all over North America.
I specify that I did not propose and do not dare to make comparisons between my work and the books of the personalities mentioned above. Everyone had their own objective and wrote according to their concerns and point of view. The famous historian Professor Constantin C. Giurescu managed to make known, in American university circles, fundamental moments in the history of Romania and had meetings with some of the Romanians settled in the United States. The writer Romulus Rusan, around the same time, by describing his visit to the USA, made it possible for Romanian readers to learn from a Romanian intellectual about the realities of American society.
I allow myself to quote from what the great historian Constantin C. Giurescu said at one of the meetings held in Boston with the diaspora "... come and see the situation on the spot, that is, do what the two colleagues, Anghel Rugina, did in previous years (at that time a university professor in Boston, our note) and Radu Florescu and what many of the American Romanians who visit us as tourists are doing. Come and see how Bucharest and all our cities have changed; come and see how beautiful our country is, which is also your country, the country where you were born."
Following the historical changes after 1989 and a favorable situation, I fulfilled a student dream and a newer passion for monuments, making several trips around North America. I traveled as a simple Romanian citizen, with a freely chosen program, with comfortable conditions and minimal expenses. Suffice it to say that during the first 3 trips I rested for 46 nights traveling by Greyhound bus to a new town. Even on the last trip, made in November 2022, I used the method of sleeping on the bus. That's how I traveled through Arizona and California, but also between Toronto and New York. My objective was to demonstrate that it is possible and instructive to visit different areas of North America. Instructive through what you see with your own eyes, after, before the trip, you tried to inform yourself and know how to look for certain objectives. At the same time, I proposed that, together with the images that were moving before the eyes, I would move before the "mind's eye" images and situations experienced by me since my teenage years, even from my childhood until today, especially in Romania.
