"Cleopatra, considered the most beautiful woman in the ancient world, was embodied on screen by Elizabeth Taylor, considered the most beautiful woman in the modern world at the time. The last queen of Hollywood gave life to the last queen of Egypt, in the most expensive film ever produced. "

Tino Neacsu

Elizabeth Taylor, a woman who eats, drinks, laughs, swears, changes wives, or buys diamonds per pound, is a large-scale personality. As a star, unlike Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich or Katherine Hepburn, she has no sexual ambiguity in her person. She is earthy and sensual, passionate and strong, yet tender and empathetic. ”

In 1962, when the highest paid company director in the United States earned $ 650,000 a year and President John F. Kennedy's annual salary was $ 150,000, Elizabeth Taylor took home $ 2.4 million. It was her salary for "Cleopatra," the most expensive film ever produced in Hollywood. The fate of a corporation - 20th Century Fox - had been entirely at the mercy of Elizabeth Taylor, just as the fate of ancient Egypt had depended on Cleopatra's nose!
Tragedy, fame, beauty, love, whims, sex, scandals, gossip, money and power seemed to be the same for both. Like Cleopatra, who died without a Caesar, killed in a plot, fell in love with Marc Antoniu, her best friend, Elizabeth Taylor fell in love with Eddie Fisher, the best friend of her late husband, Mike Todd. killed in a plane crash. Cleopatra had been infuriated for her behavior in the Roman Senate, just as 2,000 years later, for about the same reasons, Elizabeth Taylor was put on the wall in the United States Congress.
The similarities between the two were so striking that the public's perception of them made their images overlap until they were identical. Both were adored by millions and ignited the imagination of writers, playwrights, and painters. After all, the one who was considered to be the most beautiful woman in the ancient world was embodied on the screen by the one who was considered to be the most beautiful woman in the modern world at that time. The last queen of Hollywood brought the last queen of Egypt to life on screen. Even death seemed to bring them closer, because during the filming of "Cleopatra", Elizabeth Taylor almost died!
"Cleopatra" has become a phenomenon with a strong cultural impact in the context of the sexual revolution in the Western 1960s. Andy Warhol called it the most influential film of the decade. It was also the film that changed the face of the Hollywood film industry forever. The film's budget was astronomical, an unprecedented amount, equal to the annual budget of a third world country or large enough to help NASA send the first man to the moon since!
The blockbuster "Cleopatra" won four Oscars and ran successfully on screens around the world, from America to Australia and from Europe to Japan, except in Soviet Russia, where the film was imported only in 1978. It was the film with the highest grossing of 1963 and remained consistently on the list of the highest grossing films of the '60s internationally.
"It was probably the most chaotic period of my life. The Vatican excommunicated me, I received death threats, I had fallen madly in love ... It was pleasant but also painful, there were oceans of tears but also good times. " Elizabeth Taylor would declare.
Elizabeh Taylor's fascination with the public meant that by the mid-1960s, half of the American film industry's revenue came from films with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, together or separately. Those were the fabulous' 60s, the decade when a woman made more money than any Hollywood man!
With dozens of books, interviews, magazines and newspapers, feature films and documentaries, this volume is a personal insight into the life of Elizabeth Taylor and the making of the blockbuster "Cleopatra", one of the most famous films in the history of cinema.
