Reigns I Cuza and Carol have raised over time - and will continue stir - a great historical interest in the specialized literature, as in the public debate in general.
If Prince Al. I Cuza, the last two decades, trying to renew the message history led sometimes contradictory critical evaluations, focusing either on the time of the coup 2 / 14, 1864, they opposed the ruler, at first sight , democratic spirit, be on his private life, with its moral deviations. Such assessments rather send the image "dictator", on the one hand, immoral behavior of the model of a head of state, on the other. Under both aspects - especially in the second - was suggested, therefore, the comparison with the figure of Prince Charles, who succeeded to the throne, first as a ruler, then as king.
Starting from such considerations critical importance of decreasing socio-political and institutional reforms of Prince Al. I Cuza, emphasis was often a priority, specialized exegezele last two decades, the role of Charles I in the modernization of Romania.
Of course, it was time to speak and to write more than before about the personality and the role of King Charles I in history, but trying to prevent him from Union prince seemed downright bizarre. Each of the two, Prince Al. I Cuza, and the prince, then king, Charles I, had outstanding achievements in the history of Romania: first, with a reign of only seven years, but the concentrated essential achievements of the modern Romanian state, second, Carol I, a reign of nearly half a century, which were completed reforms inaugurated by the first, the Romanian state has been strengthened, with the achievement of full independence.
Each of them lived and acted as head of state in different stages of evolution of Romanian society and in special circumstances. Each of them has made its mark with its own personality, the time it was given to be at the head of state. Their merits can be assessed only in relation to time requirements which had to respond. In any case, the discussion about Romania's modernization can not begin with 1866 - the year of the reign of Charles I establishment - would be to leave aside for just a basic step, defining, for the modernization we refer.
As for the role of the ruler Al. I Cuza in the modernization of Romania, in Romanian history, in general, in any report, it remains undeniable. First of all, Al. I Cuza, the elected ruler in Iasi and Bucharest 5 and 24 January 1859, remains forever in Romanian public consciousness as a symbol of union, of this act of exceptional significance in the history of Romanians. Second, the time of his reign, how to recognize, focused achievements and developments vital for the existence of the modern Romanian state as a whole, more important than all performed throughout the reign of his successor. It records a conclusion that nowadays some historian of good faith.
And our previous synthesis, the text starts with significant changes and additions, this paper is intended mainly students and teachers of history, other categories of readers interested in the evolution of Romanian society in the modern era.
