I met Professor Daniel Dieaconu as a historian and geographer, discoverer of the stories and legends of Mount Ceahlău and its surroundings. Recommended by local people, I invited him, years ago, to a television show in Neamț, at Izvorul Muntelui. Shy, but full of information, the professor charmed me and, over time, I learned more about the scientific researcher and writer.
A native of Grințieș, Daniel Dieaconu had instilled in his soul, from his grandparents, the passions of discovering the area, of finding out and knowing as much as possible. He developed these traits at the Faculties of History and Geography in Bucharest, initiating and editorially finalizing several research projects, thanks to his encyclopedic nature.
As a historian, he brought sensitive subjects and personalities to the public, convinced that he had the ability to find new data and meanings, such as “Charles II, a king, a cult, a camarilla”, “Jews in Northern Moldova. From the first settlements to 1938 – with a special focus on Neamț County” or “Outlaws and robbers – contributions to mythology and historical anthropology”. With this last work, he got closer and closer to the realities of the place, as well as through “The Land of Răzeși – Neamț. History and ethnography”, “Dochia and Trajan. Stories and legends from the Land of Neamț” or “Monasteries and hermitages from Neamț County. Illustrated postcard”.
“Parents and grandparents in mountain villages taught and still teach their children to respect and love their family, their people and all the beautiful things that surround them. That’s what I try to teach others.” – said Daniel Dieaconu in an interview. The joy of highlighting folklore, popular customs and the traditional village prompted him to create the “Haiducilor Festival” and the “Olga Mavrocordat Sturdza” Museum of Ethnography and History.
Over time, we became closer and closer, with Daniel Dieaconu sharing many of his worries and aspirations with me. Once I asked him why he chose Bucharest over Grințieș. He answered me honestly and naturally that he could research and create at home, just as well as in the capital. In addition, the environment is more conducive to manifestation: "Here are my mountains and people, Ceahlău, Grinţieșul, Lake Izvorul Muntelui."
We talked about everything, about the world and life. But never, especially to me, did he confess his ardent passion for football. The ultimate surprise, right? He often listened to my stories from this world of sports, I gave him books on specific topics, we discussed aspects of the phenomenon, but in a general way. Until about six months ago, when he confided in me that he was working on a history of football. A history of football? "Yes," he answered me absolutely naturally, with the certainty of an experienced researcher and writer, who does not "try to "go overboard", but has a precise and consistent plan. And, one day, I received by e-mail the text and cover of the volume "Stronger than life and death. A romanticized history of football". I read it. It was a revelation, regarding the theme of the book, but also a delight and, even if it was no longer needed, a confirmation of the author's creative value.
Daniel Dieaconu's current writings form a spectacle, like a good quality football match, a performance with an experienced and skillful "director" in relation to the audience of all ages, knowledgeable or ignorant of the history of the game. He, the audience, is kept permanently in tension, with refinedly constructed "phases", with changes in rhythm and direction of the actions of this wonderful game, which we can't get enough of and which has won not only men, but also women.
The chapters alternate, with time being the benchmark of the succession. "History Bits" and "Great Football Events" intertwine with "Football Stories" and "Biographies", in a remarkable manner. All of them are so harmoniously combined that the avalanche of data, natural in a "history", "melts" into the portraits of great footballers from the country and abroad, expertly drawn.
Among the various "intervals" of the book, Daniel Dieaconu also slipped in a few moments of respite, references to sports journalists with whom he felt closer, including me, although I don't know if I deserve this honor or perhaps out of the desire to pass myself, thus, into... history. With the thought that you enjoyed my joke, and I hope the author did too, I want to emphasize that the volume is not a specialized work or a series of bland information. We have before us a brightly colored book and, out of the desire to challenge the reader to read, the title chosen is a spectacular one, not at all forced, which, in fact, expresses the absolute reality: "Stronger than life and than death".
Supporters strongly attached to the phenomenon know why. Those who are on the verge of discovering the "King" of sports will find out. Because now, at the end of these notes, I dare to conclude: the book is addressed especially to the younger generations, who can experience events through its pages.
