In the Romanian Patriarchate, the year 2020 was proclaimed the Homage Year of the Pastoral Care of Parents and Children, but also the Commemorative Year of the Romanian Orthodox Philanthropists.
The volume "Philanthropy - The Art of Good" is especially a tribute volume, which includes studies conducted to promote love of God and neighbor, social and philanthropic acts at the community level. The volume also involves studies that address educational, psychosocial, personal and noological communities.
The proclamation of 2020 as "Commemorative Year of Romanian Orthodox Philanthropists" aims to promote the social-philanthropic activity of the Romanian Orthodox Church whose philanthropic-Christian theme, the Holy Gospel and the Holy Tradition, emphasizing the connection between spiritual and human, between Liturgy and Philanthropy.
In contemporary society, the family institution, the Church, is hard hit by this coronavirus pandemic. More than ever, we must stand in solidarity, show compassion to our fellow men affected by this relentless scourge that has struck mankind. In these difficult moments for humanity, respecting the sanitary conditions imposed by the situation, the Romanian Orthodox Church has intensified its social-philanthropic activity. National Institute of Infectious Diseases „Prof. Dr. Matei Bals ”presented public thanks to the Romanian Patriarchate for the“ material support and spiritual support ”offered:“ In this difficult period, such proofs of compassion and care for those around are very important and help a lot, both medical staff and health care, especially the direct beneficiaries, the patients ”.
We can certainly say that this year of mercy could have as its exhortation: "Be merciful as your Father is merciful" (cf. Lk 6:36).
As we observe, this exhortation requires us to know the mercy of the Father, to preach it, and to offer it to our neighbor, thus becoming a means of God's mercy both in the family, in the Church, and in society.
