Ten years ago, Robert Stoica entered the "Mihai Eminescu" National College in Constanța as a ninth-grade student in the real profile, specializing in mathematics and computer science, and today the young teacher is materializing his eleventh book.
Robert Stoica, through the book suggestively titled The Basilica Under the High School. 60 years since the discovery marks the emblematic moment in the history of the "Mihai Eminescu" National College in Constanța that took place in 1962: the discovery of the paleochristian basilica with a painted crypt in the inner courtyard by history and archaeology professor Romulus Popa-Bran.
Without claiming to tell the story of the monument with the exercise of a historian, the young author's approach aims to achieve a union between all the reference materials for this edifice through the eyes of the philologist who set out to save from the rare scientific materials and difficult to access to the general public the opinions of the specialists who have pronounced on this archaeological discovery, from 1962 to the present.
Through this book, the young doctoral student aims to save through the memory of the written word the historical imprint of the basilica and, thus, puts together information about the monument CT-I-m-A-02555.05 in a mosaic of local, national and international specialized approaches.
This book is designed for both the local and foreign public, whether we are talking about the overseas or the Latin European public. In this sense, the author briefly presents the story of the monument in three languages: Romanian, English and Italian.
In the first chapter of the book, the emphasis is placed on a few observations regarding the survivals of the ancient imaginary, along with the causes by which images and symbols are decoded today according to the meaning with which they were charged in antiquity, starting from the newer theories of Gilbert Durand, Mircea Eliade, Ioan Petru Culianu, Gaston Bachelard, C.G. Jung and going up to those of antiquity such as the theories of Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Synesius of Cyrene and later Marsilio Ficino.
The second chapter and the core of the book presents the reader with the mosaic of research discussed diachronically by the author. At the same time, within this chapter, there is a photographic inventory of the symbols that decorate the martyr's enclosure, helping the reader to visualize the funerary imagery expressed by the murals. Moreover, the author also presents unpublished information from the reports of the French Missions between 1992-1996, by translating numerous passages quoted from them.
In the third chapter, the author presents the funerary meanings of the symbols that are found in the pictorial register of the veneration room under the ancient altar. Here, phytomorphic symbols such as the pomegranate, poppy, palm tree, acanthus, rose and zoomorphic ones such as the rooster are addressed.
Robert Stoica's book thus becomes a monograph of the Paleochristian crypt that completes the history of the college and represents a reference document, the visiting card of the monument for any specialized lecturer, in the process of specialization or simply passionate about history and archaeology through the objectivity and seriousness with which the author selected and treated the sources of documentation.
