Robert Stoica materializes his twelfth book, with the passion and enthusiasm that he demonstrates in all the activities he is involved in.
In this book, the author begins with a brief history of the place and the architectural monument on which he focuses his attention, offering the European and transatlantic public the opportunity to briefly learn about the history of the construction of the building of the "Mihai Eminescu" National College in Constanța, 118 years after the building was designed by the chief architect of Bucharest, George Mandrea, at the proposal of the mayor of Constanța, Ion Bănescu.
The structure of the book includes four chapters: "1. Konak, the Turkish palace of the future Romanian prefecture from 1878", "2. The neo-Romanian style in architecture", "3. 115 years. The building in postcards", "4. The basilica under the high school: the amazing discovery of 1962".
The author uses, on the one hand, the written word from the journalism of the era to (re)construct the image of the Turkish Konak Palace (which became the headquarters for the Prefecture of Constanța after 1878), on the other hand, the young author has the image (the period postcard) at the center of his book and (re)constructs through the written word the era of the early 20th century, a period in which the neo-Romanian style expresses the idea of Romanianness, which the mayor of Constanța Ion Bănescu, together with the prefect Remus N. Opreanu, wants to cultivate in the space of Dobrogea, returned to the motherland.
The book that Robert Stoica is publishing this time comes and completes the history of the place where the "Mihai Eminescu" National College in Constanța was built. Between its covers, the work Konak and the Royal High School: 118 years since the neo-Romanian design of the "Mihai Eminescu" National College in Constanța presents the reader in the first chapter with a first description of the Turkish Konak Palace, where the prerogatives of Dobrogea were taken over by the Romanian authorities, on November 23, 1878. It became the headquarters of the Constanța Prefecture until January 1883, when the building was consumed by fire. The land that remained empty will become, in 1906, the place where the building intended for the future high school will be built.
Robert Stoica reconstructs the Turkish Palace, by appealing to the memory of the written word, preserved in the pages of the daily newspaper Farul Constanței, from 1880 and 1883, but also other documents of the time, such as the notification telegrams of the first prefect, Remus Opreanu, sent to the Minister of the Interior. Researching and quoting from articles of the time about the first History Museum in Dobrogea, opened in the headquarters of the Prefecture in the Konak Palace, the author demonstrates extensive work in documenting the subjects he addresses.
In the second chapter of the book, the young author briefly presents information about the Neo-Romanian style. Then he carries out an analysis of the architectural aesthetics of the first building, in which the first high school in Constanța was established in 1911 and in which the “Mihai Eminescu” National College operates today. The discussions about the design of the building, especially that of the facade, start from period documents, namely postcards, in which the building at Traian Street, no. 19, appears for the first time. In a language easily accessible to any reader eager to find out details about the history of the building, the author refers to period documents, such as: postcards from different periods, old photographs that have never been seen before, but also other documents that highlight the aesthetics of the Neo-Romanian style, which the Constanța educational building claims.
The third chapter presents, through the prism of postcards, the evolution and architectural changes regarding the elements of neo-Romanian aesthetics that have taken place in the 115 years since the inauguration of the building. With the help of Artificial Intelligence, both the postcards and the old photographs with the high school in the foreground, from 1908 to the present, are brought back to life, putting them in color.
The author's desire for the present work to include a varied and complete range of information about the history of the building and the place is evident. Thus, in the last chapter, Robert Stoica resumes some of the notes about the paleochristian basilica with a painted crypt, which he makes in the book The Basilica Under the High School: 60 years since the discovery of the paleochristian monument at the "Mihai Eminescu" National College in Constanța, published in 2022, adding additions and revisions to the material published in the second chapter of that book.
Through this book, the young author wants to highlight the architectural importance that the emblematic building had for the expression of Romanianism in Dobrogea and for the image of Constanța at the beginning of the 20th century, but also the importance that the building classified as a historical monument of national importance has today as an in situ architectural document for the evocation of the neo-Romanian style in the century we live in today.
