The volume "Eight decades of biogeographic research at the Institute of Geography of the Romanian Academy" is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute of Geography of the Romanian Academy. The initiators of biogeographical research in the Institute were prof. Raul Calinescu and Alexandra Bunescu, who, being university teaching staff, laid the foundations for the collaboration with the Faculty of Geography from Bucharest.
Dr. Sorin Geacu, is one of the most active researchers of the current generation of biogeographers, being the author and co-author of some valuable works, among which we mention: The dynamics of deer and cattle populations from the fauna of Romania (which also obtained the "Grigore Antipa" prize of the Romanian Academy ), Dropia in Romania – biogeographic study, Buffaloes from the Romanian Plain – zoogeography study, but also the Biogeography chapter from the volume dedicated to Geographical Sciences from the "Romanian Civilization" collection published by the Romanian Academy on the occasion of the centenary of the Great Union in 1918.
The present work is a synthesis of the evolution of biogeographic thinking in the Institute of Geography, differentiated into two main fields: phytogeography and animal geography. These are characterized by a great diversity of aspects addressed at the regional and national scale: the geographical distribution of floristic and faunal elements, regional studies, the anthropic impact on vegetation and fauna, research on plant and animal associations, the study of some colonized, reintroduced, invasive or on the verge of extinction, the chrono-spatial dynamics of the populations of some mammal species, research on Mediterranean plant and animal species, etc.
All representative synthesis works of the Institute, published both before and after 1990, benefited from biogeography chapters, which are added to the volumes of biogeography published by the members of the Institute. We emphasize the special value of the works published by C. Drugescu (Zoogeography of Romania), Ana Popova (Geobotany) and Cristina Muica (the volume related to the Vulcan Mountains). Based on the contributions to the realization of the first volume of the Treatise on the Geography of Romania (1983), these three researchers were awarded the Academy prize.
In the work, special attention was paid to the biogeographical aspects related to the protected natural areas, the map at the national level published in 2003, obtaining the prize of the Romanian Academy. Concerns for biogeographical and geoecological cartography are also highlighted. They also include aspects related to the impact of climate change on biodiversity, correlated with the direct anthropogenic impact on ecosystems.
In the last part of the work, short presentations of biogeography personalities from the Institute and the list of biogeography works published between 1944 and 2014 are inserted.
The work, as a whole, is a valuable study on an important field of research in the Institute of Geography.
