Corporate social responsibility is a concept that is increasingly invoked by various authors and international documents, the induction of such behavior by economic actors is likely to contribute to reducing the effects of social problems faced by contemporary societies and promote sustainable development of them.

However, it is a reality that the Romanian literature to focus on this subject is relatively poor, and the approaches are far too theorizing and, in general, oriented towards the contributions of North American authors. Or, the economic and social reality in our country is, we must admit, very different from the one taken as a standard.

Therefore, we set out, in this paper, to analyze the concept of corporate social responsibility by taking into account both the opinions in the international literature and those in the local scientific space.

Also, those interested will be able to find an analysis and a compendium of the most important and latest standards adopted at European and international level that contain principles and recommendations designed to promote the transformation of the notion of corporate social responsibility into practical implementation actions. .

In addition, the paper analyzes the way in which companies of any kind in Romania have assimilated in their behavior the aspects of social responsibility, which allowed us to reach a series of pertinent conclusions regarding the degree of awareness of local economic agents regarding the content and usefulness of socially responsible conduct.

Our intention is also a stimulating-educational one. Through this paper we want to contribute as little as possible to the process of awareness of those involved in adopting a socially responsible behavior. This is the reason why we opted for a more accessible structural and editorial approach, with the intention of facilitating the removal of the concept of corporate social responsibility from the predominantly academic theoretical "retort" and open it to a wide range of stakeholders.

This paper is the expression of our conviction that for a country like Romania, faced with serious social problems at the individual level and at the local communities, with weakened public authorities due to lack of sufficient staff and strong underfunding, with dramatic damage to the environment and biodiversity, a the socially responsible conduct of enterprises, from small and medium to multinationals, is a chance to ensure cohesion and solidarity throughout society and, in this way, the true establishment of a functional rule of law.
