Tourism is currently one of the most dynamic economic sectors that, despite all the crises and events that happened in the previous years but also the realities of the current world economy, demonstrates a stable growth trend and an increased potential in terms of sustainable economic development , social, environmental, contributing substantially to the improvement of the standard of living, to economic growth, to the increase of people's opportunities and chances for a better life, to the fight against poverty, to the intensification of actions to protect and preserve the environment, being an area with broad implications in the lives of people everywhere.
Overall, the tourism industry has given a double meaning to the processes that coordinate the world economic system, such as globalization or general economic development, being not only influenced, but also a beneficiary of their effects, simultaneously with the impulse that global tourism has generated, on the one hand by its ability to stimulate the level of development of the world's states and to accelerate the global process of economic integration, and on the other hand by its character of internationalization of the tourist activity and connecting people and countries from all corners of the planet.
Tourism is only at the beginning of its development stage, being for now generally treated as an effective tool for generating foreign exchange resources, creating new jobs, attracting investments and promoting economic independence, representing both a basis of economic development and an environmental preservation factor. For the future, however, we attribute to it valences that will be more human than economic, that will delimit it from the rest of the economic sectors and will classify it in the category of arts and culture or domains related to spiritual well-being.
Currently, the tourism industry faces a series of problems resulting from the poor management of the environment and the failure to respect its carrying capacity, as well as that of local communities. Overtourism (overtourism in the international specialized literature) or "turismo phobia" are aspects often brought up in discussion in more and more tourist destinations intended especially for mass tourism. In this context, it is important to look at tourism from the perspective of sustainability. In order to benefit from the advantages that this industry can bring to the economy, the protection and preservation of the quality of the environment must be considered with all the implications that this entails.
The present work aims to analyze the main aspects of the concept of sustainable development, as well as aspects related to the integration of sustainability in tourism businesses or corporate social responsibility.
The book can also be a pleasant and useful reading for any person passionate about the field of tourism.
