In a world where everything (to us) happens with the speed of thought, and the results are absolutely necessary to appear immediately, if not yesterday, the practices of learning and teaching foreign languages need to adapt and keep up with the natural course of things. Students (and, in general, citizens) of the 21st century are demanding and used to the fast pace of information that overwhelmingly flows towards them from virtual environments and they need methods, tools and practices that facilitate their acquisition of a foreign language (and/or a certain type of specialized vocabulary) in the rhythm in (and with) that they are used to living.
The ABC of ESP facilitates this linguistic acquisition process, proposing a sustained practice of the study of specialized languages, extended over fifteen chapters. It gathers, among its covers, for students of the faculties of political sciences, international relations, communication and journalism, a specialized language illustrated in fragments of contemporary, authentic texts, which highlight vocabulary notions from the sphere of political sciences. Knowing this type of specific vocabulary i.e. specialized jargon (ESP) facilitates the study and understanding of texts of English expression, circumscribed to this field of study.
The specialized texts, seen as a pretext for learning, presented modularly, are the source of the specific vocabulary that I set out to illustrate in this way, permanently emphasizing the versatility and contextual plasticity of the English language. These include (but are not limited to) bibliographic materials in English intended for individual study for various curricular subjects, articles of law, treaties and international conventions or other specialized texts in the field.
The study of specialized languages is intertwined with that of academic vocabulary in the proposed synonymy exercises, and the general knowledge texts, generically called Trivia, address topics of common, socio-cultural interest and contain questions to check their correct understanding (in the Reading Comprehension subchapter Questions).
At the dawn of the infocracy, The ABC of ESP opens an invitation to go through together, chapter by chapter, an abc of communication, in clear and compact pills of content, on which I propose to discuss at each course. Knowing becomes indispensable in the century of virtual communication, the Internet, the dizzying speed of days and achievements of all kinds, where we have important obstacles to overcome, on the winding path of transforming information (more abundant than ever) into knowledge. I invite you to take a few steps in this direction together.
I would be happy to know that The ABC of ESP is (or will be) useful not only to the students I work with every day, in the course, during the academic year, but also to specialists in the field of political science or public administration, politicians or not, diplomats, journalists, people from the media, who want to know more or who (re)visit this type of specialized vocabulary from time to time and will consider The ABC of ESP to be a useful and timely work tool .
