Journalism was one of my wings without which I would not have been able to fly. In 1956 I made my debut in the newspaper "Faclia" from Cluj-Napoca. In 1957, I found myself again, temporarily in Timisoara, my hometown, where I worked from time to time at the local radio station, as a contributing announcer. Returned to Cluj, in parallel with the last year at the Faculty of Philology and History, I was employed by the regional radio station, "announcer-emission"; we worked every morning from 5.00 to 9.00. I had a part-time job and supplemented my need for money with reports.
After the two years of working at the place of assignment (Literary Secretary of the National Theater in Cluj), I managed to become a student at the second faculty, one also for... five years: Cinematography, in Bucharest (IATC). I collaborated in parallel, for little money but... a lot (!) necessary, with Radio Romania.
From the second year of the new faculty, I started collaborating with Romanian Television: I was entrusted with a "Pallyard-Bolex" (16mm) video camera by Tudor Vornicu, the Program Director, to be a permanent collaborating reporter. I worked at TVR - as they say - until my caps jumped, week after week, year after year; but that's how I managed to finish the cinematography. As head of promotion. After one year I was an assistant, after two I was already a university lecturer at the film and TV directing department of IATC; but I still shoot documentaries for TVR... I practice journalism not only out of necessity, but even with great pleasure...

"The director, journalist, researcher TIMOTEA URSU IN NEW YORK"
(Excerpt from the extensive interview conducted by NICHOLAS BUDA, published in 2011, in the weekly "GANDACUL DE OLORADO")

"WHO ARE YOU, ACTUALLY, MR. TIMOTEI URSU?!..."

Nicholas Buda: An active exponent of the group of Romanian intellectuals in New York, you have - without a doubt - a personal history, that of emigration from Romania during the years of the communist regime, a history from which the younger generations - of which I am also a part - can learn something. You became, among other things, an emigre in America, on a certain social extension even... a journalist. It seems that you have not broken the line of concern for Romanian culture and history, successfully working for the publications "Foaie", "New York Magazin", "Lumea Libera", "Conectioniuni", etc. What did these years of journalism mean in America? Does Timotei Ursu find himself in the position of the journalist of the circumstance?
Timotei Ursu: Let's understand each other: in my life I have done parallel things for... three or four lives! But never circumstantial things, but always - (Hm!... hm!...I brag... to myself!?...) - with... conviction. Journalism was one of my wings without which I would not have been able to fly. In 1956, I made my debut in the "Faclia" newspaper from Cluj‑Napoca. In 1957, I was, once again, temporarily in Timisoara, my hometown, where I worked from time to time at the local radio station: "collaborator announcer". Returned to Cluj, in parallel with the last year at the Faculty of Philology and History, I was employed by the regional radio station, "crainic-emisie"; we worked every morning from 5.00 to 9.00. I had a part-time job and supplemented my need for money with reports. After the two years of working at the place of assignment (Literary Secretary of the National Theater in Cluj), I managed to become a student at the second faculty, one also for... five years: Cinematography, in Bucharest (IATC). I collaborated in parallel, for little money, but... very much (!) necessary, with Radio ROMANIA. From the second year of the new faculty, I started collaborating with Romanian Television: I was entrusted with a "Pallyard-Bolex" camera (16 mm.) by Tudor Vornicu, the Program Director, to be a permanent collaborating reporter. I worked at TVR - as they say - until my caps jumped, week after week, year after year; but that's how I managed to finish the cinematography. As head of promotion.
After one year I was an assistant, after two I was already a university lecturer at the film and TV directing department of IATC; but I was still filming documentaries for TVR... I practiced journalism not only out of necessity, but even with great pleasure... This is how, for example, after I emigrated to America (eventually to Long Island, NY - where, for earning my daily bread, I was... a sailor, "evening manager" of... the snack bar on the ferry connecting Long Island and Connecticut), - together with two other Romanian intellectuals, neighbors, in 1995 we founded the magazine "Foaie" of which I was the director until the year 2000.
Then - in 2000 - I moved to Manhattan, New York. There, together with my new life partner, the film editor Nita From, I ran the publication "Lumea Libera" as director and editor, replacing the former editors Dan Costescu and Cornel Dumitrescu (they retired in turn, but definitively, due to illness, in 2001 and 2002). I have been paddling the weather weekly for almost four years. Difficult, but passionate years: we grew the newspaper from 24 to 36 large pages, with many new columns and themes, some signed by M.N. Rusu, Theodor Damian, Mihaela Albu, Serban Cocioba, Carmen Firan, Adrian Sangiorzan, V. Moraru and the 13 correspondents-collaborators (they: paid!) from Bucharest and from all over the world. I was a... "global" Romanian weekly, so to speak...
Nicholas Buda: Why only four years?!
Timotei Ursu: …unfortunately!… …Unfortunately, because I couldn't cover the loan that Nita From had hired for the purchase of the newspaper in time. The publication's distribution market has become extremely tight: in 2003 we were sending "abroad" (to some subscribers from Romania, Canada, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Israel, and even to Romanian soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan!), about 400 copies weekly, this in the new situation in which the postal shipment, terribly expensive after November 11, 2001, now exceeded three times... the value of the "copy" hired by subscription!... Not even half the amount was covered by local sales. At the same time, the competition became more and more aggressive: 9 (nine!) newspapers and magazines from or sponsored by... Romania started to appear at the newsstands in New York. As a rule, their distributors covered (literally, on stands, so as not to be seen by buyers!) our Romanian-American publications here: LUMEA LIBERA, ROMANIAN JOURNAL, NEW YORK MAGAZIN, FOAIE, LUMEA-USA, ORIZONT, MIORITA and CONNECTIONS. Please: competition in Romanian style!... And then, for our newspaper - a weekly mainly with current political news - the competition of the Internet has become an invincible opponent: what people could find out online the next day, we publish only... after five or six days...?! We would only have retirees left as readers, namely those not yet familiar with the computer. But their number decreased (naturally) from one month to the next. I became unable to pay. So, against my choice, the weekly was put up for sale by Nita From (she was the owner of the loan contract). The newspaper was bought in August 2004 by two "Romanian merchants" from here, from the USA, who - after several editions carried out, however, heroically, by the new editors M.N. Rusu and Mihaela Albu - "closed" it without a word. Without a bit of remorse and, above all, without saying... on whose orders...?!
We managed to save in February 2005 a complete collection of the newspaper, about thirteen bound volumes (900 issues published between 1988 - 2004) which were accepted in the library that became after 2006 the "book depository" of the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York. Better that way than at the city's garbage dump!... In those many pages there are 17 years of thoughts and events of the Romanian Anti-Communist Exile, a true history...!
Nicholas Buda: You had a beautiful career as a screenwriter and director of feature films in Bucharest ("DECOLAREA", "SEPTEMBRIE", "AL PATRULEA STOL"; 6 other fiction films on TV. Important directors from the new generation (Mircea Daneliuc and Tudor Marascu) made their film debut on scripts written by you. As an author of documentary films, you have not forgotten the cause of recovering the historical past of our Geto-Dacian ancestors. Here is how last year, after more than 30 years, you released in the light of day the prestigious volume "Kogaion. Multidisciplinary research". Your book is, critics say, - a dialogue with history, but also a challenge addressed to historians, the product of intense work as a historian, linguist, researcher, analyst, journalist and geographer - as to list just a few of the qualities that the volume demonstrates - it is also the expression of a great passion, of a great love: The Ancient History of the Romanian People!... How did Timotei Ursu's passion for the fascinating legend of... the "Sacred Mountain" of the Geto- Dacians from SARMIZEGETUSA REGIA?
Timotei Ursu: Back then, in the 1970s and 1980s, the directors of feature films were "put out on contract" and we were effectively blackmailed through these contracts to stop creating "problem films" (such a film was calculated, aberrant, even the second one - entirely written and directed by me - "SEPTEMBRIE"). But the subsequent intervention of the producer - read: ROMAN COMMUNIST STATE - in the history of my last feature film, "AL PATRULEA STOL", exceeded any imagination: the modification of an entire ideational structure of the film, through the OBLIGATORY INTRODUCTION OF A FINAL SEQUENCE, a lamentable "happy ‑end”!… (Thank God, I beneficially eliminated that embarrassing ending, last year, here in New York - on tapes…)
In 1981, together with Doru Nastase and Adrian Petringenaru, we initiated a vehement request for an audience with... Ceausescu, where twelve "former young directors" were to complain about the unacceptable abuses of the censorship directed by Dumitru Popescu-Dumnezeu. I leave aside that the audience did not have the expected result; but I, like my colleague Doru Nastase (but not... Petringenaru) - from the well-known and appreciated director Timotei Ursu, suddenly found myself eliminated: a... truly anonymous!
An anonymous person whose name was no longer allowed to appear in the media, was "excluded" from the production plan at Buftea, could no longer sign contracts, could no longer work in television either. I began to be followed step by step, my telephone conversations began to be listened to and probably recorded; my daughter was transferred overnight from the high school in the "centre" to a so-called industrial high school on the outskirts of Bucharest, where she didn't do any schooling anymore, just... washers and screws; my wife - a music teacher - suddenly saw herself with only... a half-time job (and - obviously - a half-time salary). And my passport was taken away, in order to be... "better kept" at the... PERSONAL section of the Council of Culture!"
I repeat, in that nightmare I found myself professionally, but also emotionally, only in my passion for the Old History of Romania. In the same year, 1982, I became - with "quickness of hand and (their!) disregard"! - member of the Association of Scientists from Romania, at the suggestion of a great good man, academician mathematician Nicolae Teodorescu, president of the Association (former and future Academy of Scientists)... I think those who supervised me breathed a sigh of relief: "Enough with another uncomfortable director"! ...I climbed, so to speak, in... what you called... (but not only you, but - unfortunately - everyone calls it that today!): "Sarmisegetusa Regia"!?... Who maybe you know - I said to myself - what are the pitfalls of destiny?! Maybe a... force outside my urban aspirations is calling me there, in the Orastiei Mountains?! At… “KOGAION”?!…
I had created - in theory - a study about the probable "Numerical System of the Geto-Dacians" and the demonstration was in acute need of additional, practical evidence from the field, arguments of a multidisciplinary nature. I proposed in 1983 and, supported by Nicolae Copoiu, I even formed a multidisciplinary team of AOSR that began to study the sanctuaries and the surrounding area, somewhat against the outdated concept - loaded with inaccuracies! - practiced by local archaeologists (caught then in the terrible saraband of stupid "reconstructions" from the Sanctuaries).
Our results were extremely encouraging; and the Association proposed the publication of my study, which in 1984 had been seriously amplified with evidence from the field and was entitled... "KOGAION". In 1985, we were supposed to continue this project, but... finding out who is the scientific coordinator of the Multidisciplinary Study Team from the Orastiei Mountains: Timotei Ursu - the CNST (that is, the "relevant ministry of scientific research" at that time) suddenly cut the funds for this project at the behest of... Elena Ceausescu! The manuscript of the study submitted for publication was declared "lost"; my horizon closed again. Upset that I could no longer direct films - but not even continue my passion in multidisciplinary research and - above all - very worried about the future of my children, after three years of hesitation I made that decision of terrible gravity, which I no longer regret I had thought, but not at all until then: to leave Romania. Let's get out of the Communist Hell!
...Leave MY HOMELAND behind?! ...Leave my native country behind?! My Romanian language?!... The land of my childhood, the loves of my youth, the joys of my maturity. My movies. My viewers? My graves - to whom do I leave them?! No, I was not a slime with immature thoughts, dreaming of green horses on the walls! I was 47 years old; and - what to see? ...I had just realized that I was starting to turn red. I wanted to put up for sale, vasazica, on other meridians - an expired product?!...

...I often remember my face, leaning on the railing of the deck of the POLAR VI ship, in April 1986, when the inserts disappeared in the fog...far-further-further, the last lights of the Costinesti. Was I leaving? Or the coast of Romania... was running away from me?!
It was April 1, 1986. "Fool's Day"?!...

... What do you think, dear Nicholas, did I answer - somewhat - your introductory question?!...
