The Romanian Translator’s Survival Kit was developed as part of the research schedule of the Department of Modern Languages for Specific Purposes and of the Centre for Research on Specialized Languages from a Multidisciplinary Perspective within the Faculty of Letters, Ovidius University of Constanta. It was conceived as a practical guide for new and aspiring translators with the Romanian – English language pair. It can also be used by English language students and teachers.
The book is organized in three chapters: the theoretical chapter, covering translation theory, methods, procedures and techniques, the practical chapter, which provides a series of practical tips for translators, and the applied chapter, which takes standard Romanian documents and provides their translation into English. This study focuses on the types of documents translators authorized by the Ministry of Justice commonly work with and thus mainly deals with legal and economic texts.
When available, official models were used. When the official model was not available, an authentic document was used, after being anonymized. We considered documents which are frequently translated and legalized by natural and legal persons, such as certificated of births, death and marriages, diplomas and criminal records for natural persons and registration certificate, establishment resolutions and certificates of good standing for legal persons.
