History of the Romanian language - Aida Todi

Now in second edition (History of the Romanian language. Course Notes, University Book Publishing House, Bucharest, 2004), The present volume of Romanian history course taken by students of the Faculty of Letters (day classes and part-time) and Theology (Education Day), from 1997 until today. The objectives we have set and its structure, this course is designed primarily philologists students from low frequency stations and distance learning, is designed in accordance with curriculum requirements in force. It can be a good support from teachers and students full time.
The present course is based on ideas put into circulation by Major Romanian language history of great linguists of the past (BP Hasdeu, Ovid Densusianu, Al. Rosetti, etc..), But at the same time, make referrals and research results newer. Given the number of Romanian history classes (much reduced, even at full time, compared to theoretical and practical importance and complexity of the object of study) is extremely limited at low frequency sections, we tried to fill up this deficiency by some elements to facilitate understanding and assimilation of new knowledge and increase interest in this discipline. Therefore I appeal to:
A number of bibliographic references, both within each chapter, and the final bibliography, which includes the main abbreviations specialist periodicals and a list of the main Romanian language dictionaries, I joined the list of names and works dedicated to the Romanian language and Romance latest research results. Thus, our work leverages the scientific results obtained by our predecessors, that we make them known to future generations;
b. commenting, usually in the footer of some aspects of the evolution of Romanian language and frequent references to previously acquired concepts (Romance linguistics, dialectology north and south of the Danube) and popular Romance languages;
c. small language dictionary at the end of the course, which incorporates some concepts / notions of general linguistics, linguistic geography and dialectology acquired in the first year and I th, which I considered absolutely necessary for the understanding of concepts, the development Romanian language in Romania and the Balkans context (accident phonetic law phonetic substrate, adstrat, superstratum, bilingualism, betacism, chronology relative / absolute, synchronous / diachronic, etymology, etimon, etymological doublet, innovation, etc..) dictionary is preceded by a list of signs and abbreviations in current use in the history of Romanian language and linguistics in general;
d. (self-employment proposals, grouped at the end of the course, with instructions to use dictionaries and bibliographic materials designed to supplement the theory and to fill the absence or reduced number of seminars), no substitute for direct dialogue with the teacher, these exercises constitute a starting point for discussions or independent work, students can check so as not sufficiently understood or which would need additional exercises. And that's why I did sometimes, in the footer, comments wider.
The present course was designed in eight major unit, each corresponding to a major development problems of the Romanian language, the first seven are mostly theoretical, as follows: I - Romanian - General, II - Formation of the Romanian people and Romanian language; III - Vulgar Latin; IV - Romanian language substrate (local element), V - Romanian Language Policy; VI - Romanian Language in contact with other languages; VII - Influences on the Romanian language. Each chapter contains a sequence of historical research on the problem addressed, without being exhaustive, the list provides references to the most important studies in the past and today in this field. By this, I wanted to make available information necessary to deepen each student issues are the subject of the history of the Romanian language. Completion of all such securities is not binding, they play a role rather indicative, therefore works shown will be consulted selectively, depending on the particular problems and interests of each student (Seminar possible, license or dissertation work, etc..).
The eighth unit, excluding practice - suggestions / proposals for applications (Seminar and / or independent work), aims to consolidate the knowledge acquired throughout the semester, after full assimilation rate, the exercises are, in our intention, welcome and pre-stage exam itself. From this point of view, consider attending this course useful for presenting undergraduate students from final exams and possibly admission to a special master.
We recommend students attending this work step by step, in order of the eight (seven + one) units; solving exercises suggested consulting the maps annexed and constant work with recommended dictionaries are important steps in understanding the evolution of the main problems of the Romanian language.
