Commented dictionary of Biblical words and phrases is also addressed students, teachers, the wider public with cultural and linguistic concerns, readers who are interested in knowing the expressive values of the Romanian language.
Words and phrases that I tried to meet in the dictionary, from biblical sources and research their certificates in specialized dictionaries belong treasure of feeling and thought of universal spirituality, but Romanian molded.
Useful to consider the appearance of a work like this, in a period of revival of national culture, the reference book, dictionary, encyclopedia, manual enjoying increasing attention from the general public.
The objective of this dictionary is to provide those interested in Biblical phrases used in everyday speech, but also in literature, helping to acquire and preserve the linguistic and cultural treasures.
Dictionary to fall into the category of mixed lexicographic works in that it addresses the various interdisciplinary areas of knowledge, from their point of intersection. More specifically, our work aims to portray, in a concentrated, very complex relations between biblical texts circulating in the world in different languages, two millennia from now, on the one hand, and images and phrases in everyday life inspired by these texts, on the other.
The basic perspective is the cultural-linguistic and literary, in principle, even if, quantitatively, dominates biblical references.
In speaking of all people use words, phrases, sentences that give facts, figures, life experiences through comparisons, parables, proverbs, symbolic visual images to suggest a certain reality, a phenomenon, a process, an attitude, a human behavior, etc.. It's stable structures, often fixed for each language - old or new - and in the manner asserted its own internal resources that it receives the respective community speakers as a common code, because they contain a repeated experience in peoples lives , a validated test of time teaching. Thus, human communication wins formally, for shorter message by respective formulas that esenţializează generally accepted conclusions, but also ideational plan for universal human truths that show.
Moreover, these images and symbols, played by means of words, is the thesis or at least some components of literary, artistic, philosophical constructions, moral, aesthetic theories, etc.. Signed by famous names in the history of humanity's cultural, these creations in their own way perpetuating cultural remnants of biblical origin, loading them with new meanings or sometimes, in any case, interpreting their ideational and aesthetic essence inherited from the Old and New Testaments.
Therefore, our dictionary set, in most "inputs", the relationship:
- Biblical message;
- Usual human communication;
- Communication arts.
Sometimes, when I considered that word or phrase recorded by us requires further explanation (Apostle, Eucharist, etc.), I gave short etymological indications of nature, but nature and lexical (ie word formation), semantics (synonymy, polysemy) style (shades connotative, activated by certain contexts) etc..
Then I tried to point out literary works (fiction, but also philosophical, theological, historical, essayist - in general) it is found that term - is a central subject, title, or as metaphor or as a component of the compositional structure , argumentative, etc. as a significant detail. Obviously, we have considered both literature and Romanian literature.
In a third major sequence, we identified the passage in which it appears that term / phrase that - with reference to the book and verse / verses in the Old Testament and / or New Testament, I found the quote, in full - most times - and added a little exegesis of the passage.
Every culture has such a dictionary, with the necessary adaptations to the specific language and literary and artistic productions that. An example is the comment often Expressions Dictionnaire d'biblique origin. Les's Jean Claude allusiones biblique Bologna, which I chose as a model in research Romanian versions of the Bible and then the Romanian language dictionaries. The immediate result was the finding that a few biblical phrases found in Romanian phraseological dictionaries, where they report only the style (familiar), most being recorded in lexicographic work, despite the frequency with which they are used in language, see examples like Adam's bosom, Doubting Thomas, to wash their hands etc..
Thus, we concluded that the current Romanian language has bilingual dictionaries, multilingual, explanatory, etymological, orthographical, morphological, and punctuation, the various specialized dictionaries (slang, technical terms, etc.), automatic correction programs, but does not have a dictionary of words and phrases of biblical origin came into common use.
This paper is open by nature linguistic material that is recorded as being likely additions and corrections.
The dictionary includes selective excerpts of text words and phrases and filled with biblical phrases in the common use or literary works. The latter not always reproduce the original Bible, but sometimes I paraphrase. The material is presented in a systematic criterion of keywords alphabetically, followed by expressions developed from them, the biblical references, their meaning and connotation of which came into common speech, secular. Finally, literary references (where they could be identified or taken from literature or Romanian) and biblical commentary simple, concise and end each "input".
Keywords (title) was chosen taking into account first of all, the concept that provides a consistent meaning throughout expressions. If, in a phrase or a sentence, two or more words have the same importance in defining its meaning, usually, was elected the first of these, topical order has issued, etc. frazeologismului respectively.
For quotations from the canonical Bible (Old Testament and New Testament), we chose the usual edition of Orthodox Christian worship practice (1994), but faced with other modern editions.
For quotations of apocryphal texts, we used the edition translated and edited by Cristian Badila (1999).
We hope that by the structure and form, commented dictionary of Biblical words and phrases will prove, once again, if this were the case, the strength and ability to play the Romanian language and biblical teachings will be a tool in the effort learning and knowledge of the expression of Romanian heritage.
