At the edge of an oasis sat a wise old man, meditating and counting the passage of time. Towards noon, when the heat was more scorching, a thirsty traveler arrived there, who, after drinking heavily from the vessel of water offered by the old man, asked him, between sips: “Old man, tell me, how are the people of this oasis? Are they good or bad people? Let me know if I stay here or move on. " the sage bowed his head to one side, blinking often, and after reflecting for a moment, asked him in turn, "But the people of the lands where your lordship comes from, how are they?"
The man's answer is not delayed at all. The traveler said in a soul “Oh, you have no idea what I had to face and how many evils I faced from them, that's why I took the road to the desert! Clothes and worse than there, they were not mentioned anywhere! That's why I decided to look for a place in the world where I could sit, where I could be calm. Tell me what to do? Do you think it's good to stay here or move on? ” Without hesitation, the old man advised him to go his own way, because the oasis was not the place he wanted.
Thus, the traveler turned his back on the oasis and the wise old man and set off under the scorching heat of the day. After a while, another traveler took refuge in the shade of the palm tree where his old man lived. After saying goodbye to him and getting tired of the fresh water offered by the sage, the man asked, like the traveler before him, what kind of people lived in the oasis, to know if he could stay there safely overnight. "Where do you come from, traveler, how are people, if you ask me that?", The old man examined the wanderer, before giving him an answer. "God's bread," said the man, "if it weren't for the business that always calls me on the road, I would never leave. They are such good, warm, sincere and hospitable people as you have never seen anywhere else in this world! ” Glad at what he heard, the sage said to him: “Welcome, strangers. The people here are like you, full of humanity. Knock on any door and you will be properly received by a distinguished guest. " The traveler thanked him for his advice and set off on his way to the inn, delighted that the sunset did not catch him alone, on the desert road.
In the shade of the bushes behind the old man's place, a man had taken refuge from the sun and the heat of the day, who, amazed at the contradictory answers given by the sage to the two travelers, came out of the makeshift bed he had made and confronted him. apostrophe him with a knot. "When did you lie, shameless old man, when you told the oasis dwellers that they were evil, the first traveler, or when you told the second that they were good people?"
